Anil - it's not about SEO; it's about creating compelling content constantly

Anil nails it. Instead of teaching clients how to 'game the system', SEO professionals should be helping their clients to create compelling content constantly which is what blogs do and which is why they have a high search rank. It ain't no mystery and it's unbelievable how some "SEO professionals" don't get it. From Anil Dash: Optimizing Search Engine Optimization:

If this is your trade and you can't beat someone who came in at the last minute to enter a contest that's gotten the attention of nearly everyone in your field, it's time to rethink your strategy. My suggestions? Write good content. Develop an audience that cares about what you're doing. Do something that's relevant to people in your field.

It's true

For the commenter looking for empirical evidence. Look at my articles page. It went up to PR higher than the homepage within 3 months of its creation, why? Because of constant, compelling content.

Yes, but where is the empirical evidence?

I love this post and I intend to make full use of it when trying to convince advertisers that they should work with blog publishers not SEO firms, but what I REALLY need is hard evidence in facts and figures to support the view that direct permalinks links and blog content will do more for a company's brand than investing in SEO. Do you have any? Much appreciated!

won  a contest with a blog and a few links from bloggers is enough evidence for me (and also the fact that the VanEats blog consistently beats Vancouver area-contentless food sites with zero SEO just a normal blog system)

Your mileage may vary but I think in 2006, it's no longer theory, it's fact that creating completeing content constantly,  permalinks, RSS and tagging beat SEO voodoo.
