Blogging, podcasting, etc. are about expression not high production values

UPDATE: Dave's podcast is an 18 minute ramble so if you are in a hurry here's Mark's Reader's Digest :-) version:

QUOTE

To summarize - and save you the bother of listening to Dave ramble for 18 whole minutes, people don't criticize kindergarten kid's drawings because they don't want to discourage them from being creative. And so likewise, early podcasters should not be criticized on the basis of production values because we want to see a thousand flowers bloom etc etc*

UNQUOTE

Dave really nailed it in this morning's coffee notes response to Christopher Lydon Open Source Radio pilot.

You have to be kidding, right? This is the slowest, most painfully boring "nailing" I have ever heard. 18 minutes! The comparison with kindergarten kid's art is painfully appropriate but not in the way Dave thinks: unlike a kid in kindergarten, Dave expects to be taken seriously by a world whose competitive landscape he knows very well. And by the standards of that competitive landscape he is failing bigtime. That's the first time I've listened to Dave podcasting and believe me I won't make that mistake again.

Cheers

..Mark..

PS: by "competitive landscape" I mean the competition to be taken seriously as a voice, independent of medium, not the competition to make money.

no i wasn't kidding, i should have told people to skip over the first n minutes, you are right! next time!
