It's been 10 years and there are still no compelling client side or desktop apps in Java and all the compelling server apps (sorry enterprise apps don't count as compelling!) are done in PHP, Python, Ruby, Perl, Smalltalk et al.
From Is Java over the hill ?.:
QUOTE
So is Java on the way out ? I hope not, because I believe that fundamentally Java is a great language, but Java does have some real problems. I think the root cause of most of the problems is Java's enormous scope and complexity.

That quote makes me laugh,
That quote makes me laugh, Java is not a great language only people with relatively little experience with other languages would say that.
Java is fundamentally flawed you only need to start with it's biggest contradiction "everything is an object" well no that is not true and this is only the beginning.
The only reason why (as of current) Java is one of the most popular languages commercially is only due to 2 main reasons, 1) Major hype 2) lots of universities fell into the hype and now teach it as the main language for CS students.
I wish it was just hurry up and die quicker, fade away as forgotten memory nobody wants to remember.
re: Java *is* dead
Java isn't dead - it's the new Cobol, forever doomed to walk the earth Undead.
Happy Halloween.
re: Java *is* dead
What about Eclipse as a popular client-side app written in Java?
re: Java *is* dead
Roland: There's more to Java than Java itself. MySpace, for example, could be Java-powered in a few weeks if they were willing to tweak some of their code... but upgrading from Coldfusion 5 to Coldfusion MX would mean more rewrites than their lateral move to Bluedragon.NET.
re: Java *is* dead
While I generally agree here (especially with the 'Java as the walking undead' comment) there are still a few good java apps out there. I really do like the Eclipse editor, and the azureus bitTorrent client is well done as well.
We also can't forget everyones favorite agent based modelling toolkit, Repast.
re: Java *is* dead
No compelling Java desktop apps? let's see...
Azureus, the most popular BitTorrent client, all Java.
Puzzle Pirates, a massively multiplayer online game where the client and server are both written entirely in Java (and sold in a shrinkwrapped box)
Limewire, a file sharing program written in Java that's been around forever.
before you go and jump on the Andreessen bandwagon, check your facts.
re: Java *is* dead
Hi Seth:
Not jumping on the bandwagon. Been writing about this for many years:
http://www.google.ca/search?q=site%3Arolandtanglao.com+java+dead&sourceid=mozilla-search&start=0&start=0&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official
And those apps you mention are the exception that proves the rule :-) don't you think? Limewire is dead (does anybody still use it? nobody in the Mac world does). And only early adopters and kids use Azureus. But yeah I am willing to be proven wrong. More compelling apps please!
re: Java *is* dead
Java might not be the latest and greatest hot off the presses language, but there are still plenty of apps written in it. Feedburner comes to mind.
re: Java *is* dead
The only Java app I really like is Encyclopedia Britannica 2002.
