Flickr of video doesn't exist -my video upload experience

After trying out seven video sharing services (Now Public, Ourmedia, blip.tv, revver, YouTube, veoh and audioblog.com) with my BarCamp Amsterdam 2005 People video, here are my random thoughts which basically line up with teh Boris's video blogging and sharing experiences:

  • There is (still) no "flickr of video". Flickr team please try!
  • Everybody except Ourmedia transcodes your video to make it smaller which in my video's case resulted in pixelated video. Please don't do that or provide the ability to access the original video as a premium service.
  • YouTube didn't work from PictureSync. I tried twice and each time the upload failed after a couple of minutes.
  • We need a Shozu like client to upload videos automagically from your mobile phone to all the popular video services with decent upload APIs.
  • I was astounded that YouTube, blip.tv, and Now Public enabled uploading of huge files through the browser. My video was 36MB and it worked fine with these three services using HTTP upload through the browser.
  • Vimeo doesn't cut it since most videos will be larger than Vimeo's 20MB limit.
  • If you are going to manually vet videos please do it fast! My video still hasn't appeared on veoh almost 48 hours after upload.
  • The internet archive which is where Ourmedia stores huge files needs to take less than 24 hours before posting the video to their servers.
  • Audioblog.com please change your name (how about videoblog.com or something with the word video in it?), add tagging and charge extra to keep the original non transcoded version. With those 3 things and an API for upload, audioblog.com with a shozu like client would be the closest to the "flickr" of video.

Thanks for your thoughts,

Thanks for your thoughts, Roland. That was what I was looking for and I'm happy I don't have to try all this out myself.

re: Flickr of video doesn't exist -my video upload experience

For a while I had good success with ourmedia. The last few months, there have been some upload issues. I've been going straight to internetarchive.org. It's a bit cumbersome but works.
I recently heard of a new service that claims to be the flickr of videos called clipshack. I haven't had a chance to try it out but I was intrigued by its inclusion of flickr as some type of standard.

re: Flickr of video doesn't exist -my video upload experience

I think your video (which I still need to watch btw) would be a perfect candidate for putting it on Prodigem ;-) (ie. no file size limit, has bandwith limit though, but 3 Gi should be more than enough for this)

Roland,

when you re finished with your quest for the Flickr of video, consider installing LULOP2 open source and get your own video asset management tool ( http://lulop2.sf.net ).
LULOP2 does most of the things you expect in terms of upload download, transcoding from the Flickrs of video, and even more ( http://lulop.org/open/?p=80 ) . Then what Lulop2 cannot do for you, you could do it for LULOP2.
It is beta but stable since it has been powering for 9 months our commercial website http://lulop.com which hosts a very large library of broadcast videos.

Believe me, we stress about the name. But hey, at least we got audio podcasting down. Look for video podcasting and transcoding to ipod friendly formats soon.

re: Flickr of video doesn't exist -my video upload experience

cool, looking forward to checking out the improvements Eric
lorenzo: is there a place where i can try out lulop2 without installing it myself

Hey Roland,
If you still haven't found you're choice video site, take a look at a list I've compiled of video sharing websites:
http://25thdimension.blogsome.com/2005/11/01/the-creme-de-video-sharing-websites/
The list stands at 18 at the moment. Hope it helps.

I have been using Veoh for 3 weeks, and all my videos have gone up within 5 minutes. I like the interface, and that they don't restrict on number of videos or filesize. They just announced that they have over 10,000 videos available. Like them more than Archive of YouTube.

I would strongly encourage checking out vSocial. While we are very strong on the lowest common denominator features (working, simple, quick thanks to our AJAX UI) for a great video clip sharing site, a core part of our differentiation is in enabling users to actually "do something" with video; namely to tell stories, start conversations and extend blogs. Three features that you can quickly check out yourself:

1. Share favorite videos via clipmails (a type of formatted email)

2. Create short videos via our "video roll" builder tools

3. Embed BOTH favorite clips and video rolls in a web site

I have written a post that articulates our vision called, "Short attention, short conversations and video clips." Here is the URL: http://thenetworkgarden.blogs.com/weblog/2005/10/vsocial_video_c.html

vSocial is, of course, available at http://www.vsocial.com.

p.s. click the about box to get a quickie example of a video roll. :-)

Thanks!

Mark
