Wireless data in Canada is ridiculously expensive | Boris is right

LATER: The $50 a month unlimited data plan is no longer available to new Fido subscribers. I am "grandfathered". So unlucky new users will get r*pped off! This is really bad and doesn't encourage mobile data at all!

My data traffic from my last Fido bill was 89 Megabytes (of cameraphone pictures uploaded to flickr using the fantatic flickr uploader Shozu) which means that if I didn't have the $50 a month flat rate plan, I would be paying $30/MB * 89 = $2670 (this can't be right, it can't be this much of a r*poff, somebody leave me a comment and say it ain't so!) ! Until we have real competition in Canada (which is not in the cards thanks to the moribund CRTC; the next mobile phone I buy with my own money, like Boris, will use WiFi to route around this damage!), I can't see wireless data services taking off here. I laugh every time I see one of the Canadian TV phone ads and picture the sad day when one of these TV phone customers gets their bill. Hah! Even cameraphones are a r*poff here in Canada!

QUOTE

Mentioning his on the road week at Les Blogs, Paolo Valdemarin reports that 3G access with his phone costs 0,75 eurocent/kb = 7,6 Euros per Mb.

I would happily pay that price, especially for the approximately 300kbps speed of 3G. How much does wireless cost in Canada? Well, only Fido/Rogers have GPRS, while Bell and Telus have the ridiculous 1X no SIM card lock in nonsense. If you don't have a data plan, GPRS costs $30 CDN / MB, or 30 cents/kb. So, uploading one picture from my 1.3MP cameraphone costs about $9. Ridiculous!

This is the samething with Gas price, the oil price drop from 150$ to 42$ and we pay instead of 1.58$/litre just 0.85$, it s not even half.

what is truly sad is the

what is truly sad is the fact that here in April 2008... data rates remain UNCHANGED!

are there any canadian cell

are there any canadian cell phones with wifi.

you can't buy any wifi phones from canadian carriers directly

but you can buy them from tigerdirect.ca or expansys.ca or dell.ca!

Is there somthing we can do?

Is there somthing we can do? The Canadian companies are ripping us off. US are paying 20$US for *true* unlimited data. I think this is a pure money grab and will last as long continue to pay for it.

that's why i am getting a WiFi phone that runs Skype or SIP

any other things we can do? got some suggestions

Errr...

I can't believe Boris would really be happy to pay E7.60/MB - that's still CAD$11/MB or $3.50/sec at 300KB/sec :-). I doubt you'd like a $950 bill much either.

The important thing is that you *can* get a $50/month unlimited data plan, right? It would be nice if there were some better options in between, for sure, but I'm not really feeling the urge to man the barricades over this one.

Now, blackberry users on international roaming who have to pay their own bill, those guys have something to complain about, believe me.

$50 a month unlimited data plan is no longer available

The $50 a month unlimited data plan is no longer available! I am "grandfathered" which means I am lucky and this is not available to others like you for example!

grandfather

l have the 50.00 unlimited and we have had it for about 4 years and we use it all the time , but we went to the states and they cut us off and said that it didn;t cover the states anymore , so when we got back l phoned them and told them that l had unlimied data to Canada and US. and they told me they had changed the plan and it doesn;t cover the States anymore. Have you gone to the states and tried yours and does yours cover the states.

Actually...

I have the $50 unlimited Fido plan too... didn't realize they'd discontinued it. Lucky for me, I guess. That does suck, for everyone else. I switched from Rogers to Fido because Rogers' $50 plan was just a promo while Fido's was a permanent deal. I guess Rogers killed that as part of their assimilation of Fido.

I do have a Blackberry too, on Rogers. And I use it while roaming. But I don't pay that bill myself.

So, I will concede your point about Canadian prices. But prices are going to have to get some way below E7.60/MB for there to be any mobile data critical mass.

..Mark..

yup i agree!

yup i agree! need lower prices!

This is how retarded it TRULY is

To illustrate how completely retarded this is, if you want to save money, drive down to the states and get a T-Mobile plan. Then, *ROAM* in Canada. GPRS roaming is $10/MByte US and Canada... here in Canada, for us Canadians, it's $30/MB. So you're still saving 66% by roaming in Canada on a US Carrier! Go Canada!

yeah sad but true but read the fine print about T Mobile

if you roammore than 60%, Boris told me they can discontinue your service and charge  you $900
