I'm just starting to dip my toe into this. It's more confusing than it needs to be.

I'm just experimenting with some digital video from my recent vacation in China and it's been a learning experience. I just assumed that Windows XP can read MPEG2 format as that's what used by DVDs. Well no,
not according to Microsoft - looks like you need to buy additional third party software to be able to view DVDs:

I guess it's just that most computer manfucturers include DVD readers on top of Windows XP that I never realized this before.
